Planning guide · Plan around access, visible pipework and the spaces you want to keep.
A narrow access path changes the plan
If your property has a tight side return, measure the narrowest gate and photograph the route from the street to the proposed installation point. Include steps, bends and fixed obstructions. A filter needs room for future cartridge removal, not just enough space for the housing. A heat pump also needs a workable delivery route. These are property checks, not a reason to rule out an upgrade before assessment.
Decide what should stay out of sight
Tell us which walls, finishes and outdoor spaces you want to preserve. Whole-home filtration depends on locating an appropriate incoming supply connection. Under-sink RO can be an alternative when your main priority is the kitchen drinking outlet. If you are planning work on a heritage-listed property, check applicable requirements before agreeing to changes to the building.
Think beyond the installation day
Ask where you will isolate the equipment and how someone will reach it for maintenance. A cupboard that just fits a system may be awkward when filters need replacing. For hot water, discuss the proposed position relative to windows and adjoining properties, then request the manufacturer’s clearance and operating information.
Have these ready for your enquiry
- A photo of the side passage and gate width
- Photos of the water entry and kitchen cabinet
- Any known property or strata restrictions
Can a kitchen filter be considered before a whole-home system?
Yes. If drinking water is the immediate priority, an under-sink RO assessment can be a separate starting point. It does not treat every tap, and you should compare its upkeep and water use before choosing.
