Start with the outlet you want to improve
Write down the moment you want to change. Is it the taste of a glass from the kitchen tap, chlorine odour while showering, or the convenience of filling a kettle without bottled water? That answer helps separate a whole-home project from a drinking-water project. If the concern is hot water energy use, neither filter is a substitute for considering a heat pump.
Sydney Water says its supplied drinking water is safe to drink from the tap. A preference for different taste should not be turned into a claim that an entire suburb has unsafe water. Look at information from your actual supplier when framing your concerns.
| Question | Whole-home filtration | Under-sink RO |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it work? | At a suitable incoming supply connection. | At a dedicated kitchen drinking-water outlet. |
| What should I ask about? | Media, flow, pressure, treatment boundary and access. | Membrane, cartridge stages, output, cabinet space and reject-water use. |
| Does it treat every tap? | Only outlets on the treated supply, as confirmed in the installation scope. | No. It serves the connected outlet. |
| What is the ongoing commitment? | Model-specific cartridge and service requirements. | Model-specific pre-filter, membrane and other replacement requirements. |
Read claims at model level
A category name such as carbon filtration or reverse osmosis is not a complete performance specification. NSF advises consumers to check the specific reduction claim as well as the standard on a certified product. A certification mark should not be read as proof that a unit reduces every substance covered by a standard.
Ask for the proposed model’s performance sheet and the conditions attached to its claims. If hardness or scale is your concern, ask explicitly how the proposed treatment addresses it. Do not assume a conventional filter is a water softener. There is no basis for promising “100% pure water” from the service name alone.
Compare the ownership experience
Request an installed quote that identifies the model, included components and the work needed at your property. Then ask what replacement elements cost, how they are obtained and how much access is needed. For RO, include reject-water use in the conversation. For a whole-home system, ask about the expected flow at busy times and the outlets included.
Can both be useful?
A home may have different goals for the incoming supply and the drinking outlet. A combined proposal should explain the purpose of each unit, rather than duplicating equipment without a clear objective. You can also stage a project, beginning with the part of daily life that matters most to you.
Before the free assessment
- Describe the taste, odour or convenience issue you want to change.
- Bring photos of the water entry and open kitchen cupboard.
- Ask for the model’s claims and replacement schedule in writing.
- Separate essential requirements from nice-to-have preferences.
Puora Plumbing offers a free in-home filtration assessment. The installation offer includes a hot water unit flush and clean, subject to suitability; this is not a claim that flushing sterilises a system.
Quick answers
Does RO replace whole-home filtration?
No. The treatment location and intended use differ. An under-sink unit does not filter shower or laundry water.
Is a more expensive filter always more suitable?
No. Compare documented performance, capacity, installation requirements and maintenance against your objective, rather than price alone.
